Maximising battery life on the 3G iPhone

I used my iPhone out in the “real world” yesterday for the first time. I was somewhat alarmed to see the battery power remaining indicator going down almost as I watched it!

I wanted to keep the wireless on, as I had access at the time, so I checked the settings and discovered the option highlighted in the screenshot below:

Setting this to off maintains connections to any networks you’ve previously connected to, but stops it “hunting” for new networks. This also helped keep the unit cool. When this option was on, the iPhone was getting pretty hot, presumably because it was constantly scanning.
