10,000 apps and going strong

Posted in General by iPhoneUsers.Net. Published November 30th, 2008

148Apps (a terrific iPhone apps site, by the way) reports that’s there are now 10,000 applications in the iPhone Apps store.

To celebrate, they’ve build an “icon wall” representing every app, which must’ve taken some doing!

This is quite an achievement for Apple and all the developers out there. One can only imagine how many there will be in another 12 months, although how many are actually worth installing is another matter.

Welcome to iPhoneUsers.net and thanks for visiting.

The launch of this site coincides with the launch of the 3G iPhone and it’s creation is a result of purchasing one of these stunning examples of technology.

I’ll be providing reviews of iPhone apps from the AppStore, as well hints and tips on using the phone and it’s applications.

So, how was my purchase experience? I ordered the phone from the O2 site in the UK on the Monday before launch. I started the attempt at 8 AM and my first 2 attempts failed. Third time lucky, I guess! I received an order number and O2 took my money, but I received no confirmation email, which got me a little worried. However, by Wednesday, the O2 site was showing my order as having been dispatched, so I was confident it was on the way.

On arriving home on Friday, I found DHL had delivered it next door, so I rushed round to get my shiny new toy.

I then joined the queue of apparently half the planet trying to activate their phone via iTunes. It took around 2 hours to get it completed and I was away.

I wasn’t able to sign up with iTunes until Saturday, so that was the first time I had a chance to check out some of the Apps. NetNewsWire has long been one of my favourites on my MacBook Pro, so this was my first choice. It works extremely well on the iPhone - pretty much as I would’ve expected it to. After signing in, it synced my subscriptions and download the latest updates. Fuss-free and very usable.

I’ve downloaded a bunch of other free apps, so I’ll report back when I’ve had more of a chance to play.

First impressions of the phone? Stunning! Setting up WiFi was a breeze. iTunes synced all my contacts, calendars, email settings etc with no fuss. The push email is superb. I subscribed to a few podcasts via iTunes, synced the phone again and everything was then available on the phone ready to use. The user interface is a joy to use. I’m still getting used to the keyboard, but I’ll get there! This is a keeper.

Do you have a 3g iPhone? Thinking of getting one?
